Historic buildings

Due to czech’s rich history, it is home to over 120 major castles and chateaus and countless smaller ones.

The most memorable buildings near As , that are worth a visit on your day off from the tablea at Grand Casino Aš, are Chateau Sokolov, Loket Castle, Kynžvart Castle  and  Cheb Castle. All of them easy accessible from As within 10-20 minutes with the car or bus.

Chateau Sokolov

On the place of a water fortress from the 13th century and a Late Gothic castle of the Šlik family, built as a Renaissance chateau of the Nostitz family and rebuilt in the Classicist style.

Loket Castle

A 12th-century Gothic style castle on a massive rock. It is surrounded on three sides by the Ohře river. Once known as “the Impregnable Castle of Bohemia”, because of its thick walls, it is one of the oldest and most valuable historical stone castles in the Czech lands. It is administered by the Loket Castle Foundation since 1993 and preserved today as a museum and national monument.Every year the town plays host to an Opera festival, with performances by the Czech National Opera in an outdoor amphitheatre with the castle as a backdrop,and is also host for the Czech motocross grand prix.

Kynžvart Castle

The first castle, built before 1600, collapsed. After the Battle of White Mountain during the Thirty Years’ War, the remains of the castle were confiscated and by 1630 granted to the Metternich family and turned into a Baroque residence. From 1821 to 1836, the Austrian Chancellor Klemens Wenzel von Metternich remodeled the building in the neoclassical style.The castle has a library that includes over 200 examples of incunabula, medieval manuscripts, valuable prints, scientific books, and scientific encyclopedias.In 1828, a museum was founded to display the castle’s natural science collections, coins, historical and technological curiosities, manuscripts, ancient Egyptian monuments, marble sculptures, and pieces of Oriental art.

Cheb Castle

The occasional residence of sovereigns experienced important diplomatic negotiations and significant political events of European history.The last one was the plot and crafty murder of generals loyal to Albrecht von Wallenstein, the commander-in-chief of the Austrian Emperor’s troops, in 1634. Since then the castle started to decay. It has recently been granted the status of Unesco World heritage.
